QUICK LOOK AT BOTH Frontals and closures have different advantages and setbacks, the choice you make between them depends on what you are trying to achieve with your wigs or hair extensions. In short, frontals and closures are what we call mini hairpieces, they are used to finish off your sew ins or added to top wigs for more volume. Naturally the goal is to give you a flawless but natural look, like the hair is growing out of your scalp. Let’s start with frontals. FRONTALS We at Ada Leroux Hair really love frontals, they are so versatile allowing for styling flexibility. Of the two mini hairpieces mentioned above, a frontal usually measures 13 inches in length from ear to ear and go 4 to 6 inches deep. This length is great because it allows for deeper partings and front updo’s. Secondly, they are a great solution for women and girls experiencing traction Alopecia or other medical hair loss issues because they also require less bundles. Frontals are made with a lightweight materials: the hair is hand tied knotted to the lace so that when its laid next to skin looks like hair growing out of scalp. Customization is often required and should be done by an experienced hair stylist. Due to delicate materials used a word of caution is needed, as great as frontals are we do not recommend them for daily everyday wear. Frontals give you so many options for styling. You can do a center part or deep-side part, but you can also pull your hair back into a half-ponytail or full ponytail. Closures are hand tied and knotted with human hair giving the illusion of hair growing from scalp. The closure can be placed on the middle, right or left side of the sew in or wig. Unlike the frontal, which allows you to part your hair in an infinite number of ways, the closure only allows for a few different parting styles. If that is a big concern for you, then opt in to the largest sizes closures 5×5, 6×6, or 7×7-inch. Closures are an excellent choice for daily wear and tends to be a bit easier to manage. If you are thinking about trying bangs then closures are great way to test that look out. Keep in mind it’s not really possible to create up-dos or half ponytails with closures, but they are great for every day styles that is why they cost a bit less than frontals. How to successfully care for your system at home Keep your hair system looking great I remember the very first wig I bought, I was so excited. My wig was a long wavy black one, back then it was called a “french body wave”. I wore my first wig for about a week and I decided to wash it because I was in a hurry and needed it to look a certain way. So I took it off my head and just started wetting it. To my horror the wig became completely matted to the point I could not do anything to fix it. Needless to say I ended up having to buy another wig that same day. As I became a hairstylist and learned more about hair and extensions I realized that I was not properly educated in how to wash my wig or hair extensions. I did not realize that beauty shop “hair” is not really hair. Have you ever noticed when you buy hair that it seems to get matted or tangled after washing it just a couple of times? That’s because its literally disreguarded hair from the temples or hair collected from brushes and combs. Ugh anyways, the point I am trying to make is that I did not purchase good quality hair to begin with, nor did I know how to wash it correctly. So, I thought perhaps you may want to know how to successfully wash your wig at home. First let me start by saying if you search online you will see many different examples of how to wash a wig at home. Some suggestions are good and some are not. I am sharing my experiences of trial and error by washing my own wigs at home. You must decide which suggestions works best for you. Tip 1 Deciding how often you want to wash your wig is a personal choice. However, many women choose to wash their lace wigs and hair extensions every one to two weeks. In the Summer the hot weather can be a bit of a challenge, in such cases it’s a good idea to simply rinse hair with lukewarm water and apply conditioner sparingly to avoid buildup. If the hair begins to feel sticky or dry, it may be time to give it a good shampoo. The same goes for if the wig begins to lose its curl or volume. Remember, washing your wig will limit its lifespan, so you don’t want to over wash it. If you wear a wig cap underneath and remove your wig before going to bed, you can help reduce the number of times you need to shampoo and condition it. Plus it extends the lifespan of your wigs, extensions, and toppers. Tip 2 Before you purchase your next wig please buy a styrofoam head or a canvas block head. You can find them both on Amazon but the styrofoam head can be found at your local beauty supply store for next to nothing. Now I normally start with a canvas block head that is smaller than my actual wig size. For example, I wear a small to medium wig cap so I would get a small canvas if you don’t want to overstretch your wig. Next I take my wig and pin it down to the canvas block head then I put one more pin in the back so it doesn’t fall off. Once I’ve done that the next thing I’m going to do is comb the wig out make sure there’s no tangles in it at all. Of course you want to get the right shampoo (sulfur-free) for the rest of the steps. After I’ve combed it out, take the wig and set it down into the sink. Just begin to wet it with water until it’s fully saturated. Once it’s fully saturated put it in your hand in and rub it around a little bit and then slowly add more shampoo to it. Remember to keep the shampoo and conditioner away from the lace because the lace has been hand knotted and if it gets wet then hair will start to shed more so be careful. Tip 3 Carefully rinse the shampoo and conditioner out of the hair, which is very easy to do because you have the wig sitting on the wig head. It’s been my personal experience over the years that this is actually the best way to shampoo and condition your wig. Instead of trying to hold the wig in your hand and doing all that other stuff this is it’s better with a block head. It’s stress-free and you allow the wig to keep its shape. Most well-made wigs have a shape that it fits around your head and if you mess around with that too much it will literally cause it to collapse and it will lose its shape. So when you’re not wearing your wig it’s always a good idea to put it on the styrofoam head or on a canvas block. Now the hair should feel really soft and I’m also suggest you remove your wig off the styrofoam head or canvas block head and lay it on top of a soft towel and gently roll it to remove the excess water.

Bobby Pins If your wig does not come with clips inside, have some bobby pins in the vicinity to add to the wig to secure it! Wig clips are a better option, but you can use bobby pins when you don’t have that option! So here are some simple suggestions click here. There have been a few times where I have encountered a unit with no type of clip or comb to secure my wig. To be honest, before I realized I could use bobby pins, I would get so nervous that the right gust of wind at the wrong time could blow my wig right off my head! However, with bobby pins, you can pin the sides of your clipless unit down to your perimeter braid, and rest assured that your wig is stable. Just take two to four bobby pins, pin your braid, and you are good to go. I typically do one above each ear and two at the nape of my neck for extra security. Because the hair falls over the pins, I don’t have to worry about the pins showing and giving away my secret! Wig Tape Wig tape is a great way to secure your wig to secure the wig to your head; it is recommended that you get this type of installation done by a professional hairstylist to avoid traction alopecia in your hairline area. THE HOW Wig tape is attached to the underside of your wig and around the hairline, (it is sometimes applied with medical-grade adhesives) giving the wig wearer a more extended and secure hold for up to two weeks. It’s a more scalp-friendly alternative than wig glue. Still, since wig adhesives can irritate a sensitive scalp, we recommend that a skin test should be performed before using, particularly for those recovering from cancer treatment. However, wig tape is a great way to keep your wig in place while allowing for natural movement. THE PROS Best for hair-free areas, as the tape is double-sided. It can be unpleasant if it adheres to your hair (if you have some). That being said, many different types of adhesive removers are available on the market. Again, we highly recommend you seek guidance from a professional hairstylist to find the right solution for you. Wig tape has polyurethane tabs which some medical wigs may have. If your wigs do not have this, clients also used tape against a standard cap, which works in the same way. For additional wig security, you can add silicone solution sheet strips to your wig or hairpiece and the tape will attach to the wig on one side, and the scalp to the other. Each hair fiber is made up of three layers. The innermost layer is called the medulla, and it is composed of loosely packed cells at the center of a single strand. The middle part of your hair fiber that surrounds the medulla is called the cortex, which comprises keratin proteins and structural lipids. The cortex makes up most of the hair strand mass and is surrounded by the cuticle layer, which protects the overall structure of each strand. The hair cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair shaft, it acts as a protective barrier for the hair strand and gives it a lot of shine. The cuticle is made up of layers that look like shingles. You can take one strand of your hair and slide your finger down your hair shaft. It will feel really smooth. To feel the cuticle, you will need to slide your fingers up your hair strands to feel the shingles that compose the cuticle. So why is the cuticle so important when dealing with hair extensions? If the hair strands are not going in the same direction, the hair will not be happy, and you will not be satisfied because it will tangle up all the time. When creating hair extensions, the hair needs to be going in the same direction. The Hair Extension Industry Truthfully, the hair extension industry is still largely unregulated and does not have a legitimate grading system. Since 2010, Hair extension manufacturers have struggled to set themselves apart from their competitors regarding how to grade and sell more of their hair extension products to consumers. So, these manufacturers came up with the so-called hair grading system that uses a combination of numbers ranging from 4 to 12 and the letters, usually “A” or “AA and “AAA.” All this is an attempt to prove that their hair is better quality than the other hair extension manufacturers. As a licensed hairstylist and certified hair replacement specialist, I have a unique perspective about hair extensions as I have personally worn and installed just about every type of hair extensions. The number one piece of advice I give people seeking to purchase new hair extensions or wigs is to take the hair extensions and run your fingers through it. If you feel any type of resistance then you may have a valid reason to be concerned. Next, gently take the hair bundle and slide it behind your neck. It should feel great, not itchy. Hair Extension Types Different degrees or types of hair are used when manufacturing hair extensions, wigs, hairpieces, and toppers. Lets go over some of the common types of hair you’ll find. 100% Virgin Hair (Raw) Raw virgin hair is sourced from donors who did not use chemicals on their hair. The hair is usually thick and in excellent condition; it is the most expensive hair you can buy and it has the highest quality. It is human hair with all the cuticles going in the same direction which hasn’t gone through any chemical or mechanical processing. Some manufacturers will steam treat the hair to create a different texture. If the hair is straight, it is still raw virgin hair. Remy or Remi HairThis hair is sourced from two or more donors. Remy’s hair is also 100% human hair. All the cuticles go in the same direction to prevent tangles and matting, but unlike Virgin Hair it has been chemically or mechanically processed. Regardless, it is still high-quality hair that will last you for a long time. 100% Human Hair/ Non-Remy Some hair manufacturers choose not to take care the hair and keep the cuticles in alignment. Although the human hair has not been mixed with synthetic hair, non-remy hair has been stripped of its cuticles in an acid bath.The hair manufacturers must add silicone to keep the hair looking shiny and smooth. The only problem is the silicone eventually shampoos out after just two to four washes, and then it’s a tangled, matted mess!! It will not last s long as 100% Raw virgin or Remy’s hair.
