RAW HUMAN HAIR So, what is raw hair and where does it come from? Raw unprocessed human hair is sourced mainly from overseas. India, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and South America are hotspots for raw hair. Hair that comes from China is usually processed in some form. They apply chemicals, steam it, bleach it blonde, remove the cuticle and coat the cap with silicone to match various textures. On the other hand, raw hair is exactly as the name applies; Raw, unprocessed, 100% human hair. When you think about unprocessed this means it has not undergone ANY chemical, heat or steam processing. Raw hair is the most purest and natural form of hair available on the market. Raw hair is great; the quality is top notch and if taken care of, it can last from two to four years. Now lets get into the details of raw hair. Single donor hair is a bundle of hair that is cut only from one donor, that is what’s called single drawn hair. Double donor hair is cut twice from one donor (This type of hair is more expensive than a single donor). When the hair is collected from donors it is examined for evidence of lice then its washed, shampooed, conditioned, sorted then made into the wigs, frontals, closures, and bundles we all love! The beauty of Raw hair is that no two bundles are the same in terms of color and texture. That’s because the hair is not steamed from uniformed patterns. The other thing to keep in mind is that raw human hair will most likely be aligned, meaning the hair is organized in the same direction to keep hair from tangling. To test this out you can simply take a few strands of hair starting from the top and run your fingers down the length of hair. It should be very smooth, however if you do the same thing in the opposite direction you should feel some resistance or friction that is an indication of real quality hair that will last from two to four years (depending on how well the hair is cared for). Raw hair does require regular maintenance to maintain its sheen. As weird as it seems, raw hair needs a lot of moisturizing and conditioning. We highly recommend using quality products, salon grade hair care products may cost more, but in the long run it will preserve the life span of your wigs or hair extensions. If that’s not an option for you then please use products that has no sulfates, paraneans, or alcohol as these ingredients tend to strip raw hair leaving it dull and brittle. However, in most cultures; a full head of luscious hair still is the epitome of feminine beauty and even of female gender identity. When a woman loses her hair, she may feel like she is losing her identity. This can be a traumatic experience with devastating impact on a person’s self-confidence. On top of that, often there is little social and public support for hair loss. If you are not dealing with a life-threatening disease, people’s complaints about losing their hair is often overlooked and downplayed. “There’s worse than that”, “You’ll live with it”, “Girl shave it off rock that bald head”, or “It’s no big deal”, these words can be demoralizing to women struggling with hair loss. It is no surprise that 47% of hair loss sufferers would spend their life savings to regain a full head of hair and 60% would rather have their hair than money or friends. Even more unfortunately, the medical community also treats the issue of women’s hair loss as if it was nonexistent. Since hair loss does not appear to be a life threatening event, most physicians pay little attention to women’s complaints about hair loss and essentially tell their patients the same hurtful words, “you’ll just have to live with it”. When I volunteered with the American Cancer Society, they only offered synthetic wigs to the patients. The general consensus was that the patients should be glad to have this free wig that is offered to them. Their hair will grow back eventually, right? In my time of volunteering I can truly say all these women wanted was a real natural looking wig. Causes of Hair Loss From crowning glory to terrifying nightmares, here are some reasons why a woman can lose her hair: Hereditary hair loss, which means it can be inherited from a parent. Hair cosmetics with harsh chemicals. Illnesses and medications, like Alopecia, cancer and chemotherapy. Self-infliction, hair pulling also known as trichoitmilla and (traction alopecia) where constant pressure is causing the hair to fall out (wearing certain hairstyles, such as tight braids or tight ponytails). Hormone-related disorders, such as Thyroid disease or high stress levels. Autoimmune diseases. During pregnancy and during menopause women can lose their hair. Poor nutrition and rapid weight loss can also contribute to hair loss. In addition, allergies are a risining cause for concern, they can also result in hair loss. Diagnosis of Hair Loss When these concerns persist, a woman who suffers from hair loss generally will consult a dermatologist for a proper treatment plan. In most cases some hair loss can be reversed if discovered in time. However, generally speaking, no doctor is needed to validate the first signs of hair loss, which often can push a woman into a state of high alert, if not panic. The signs are first experienced in the privacy of the bedroom or bathroom; she wakes up in the morning to find hair on the pillow. Then she notices excessive hair loss when washing and brushing her hair. Her once full ponytail suddenly looks thinner or her part is widening. Ways to combat Hair Loss First thing is to figure out what is causing your hair loss. Typically during high-stress periods of life, we’re suffering from a vitamin deficiency as well. Make sure that you take your needed vitamins, eat a well balanced diet, rest and remove yourself from any situation or people who bring negativity to your life, visit your doctor, and do your best to be as healthy as possible. During this period of hair loss, avoid heavy hair products as they can weigh your hair down, and cause it to be thinner. Be gentle when caring for your hair during this time to avoid losing more hair, and most importantly, be patient! We all suffer from stress, but as long as we take care of ourselves as we go through the motions, we can manage it and experience happy times. Ways To Increase Hair Growth Even if you’re going through a stressful time in life, there are ways to curb that and still promote hair growth in your life. How to successfully care for your system at home Keep your hair system looking great I remember the very first wig I bought, I was so excited. My wig was a long wavy black one, back then it was called a “french body wave”. I wore my first wig for about a week and I decided to wash it because I was in a hurry and needed it to look a certain way. So I took it off my head and just started wetting it. To my horror the wig became completely matted to the point I could not do anything to fix it. Needless to say I ended up having to buy another wig that same day. As I became a hairstylist and learned more about hair and extensions I realized that I was not properly educated in how to wash my wig or hair extensions. I did not realize that beauty shop “hair” is not really hair. Have you ever noticed when you buy hair that it seems to get matted or tangled after washing it just a couple of times? That’s because its literally disreguarded hair from the temples or hair collected from brushes and combs. Ugh anyways, the point I am trying to make is that I did not purchase good quality hair to begin with, nor did I know how to wash it correctly. So, I thought perhaps you may want to know how to successfully wash your wig at home. First let me start by saying if you search online you will see many different examples of how to wash a wig at home. Some suggestions are good and some are not. I am sharing my experiences of trial and error by washing my own wigs at home. You must decide which suggestions works best for you. Tip 1 Deciding how often you want to wash your wig is a personal choice. However, many women choose to wash their lace wigs and hair extensions every one to two weeks. In the Summer the hot weather can be a bit of a challenge, in such cases it’s a good idea to simply rinse hair with lukewarm water and apply conditioner sparingly to avoid buildup. If the hair begins to feel sticky or dry, it may be time to give it a good shampoo. The same goes for if the wig begins to lose its curl or volume. Remember, washing your wig will limit its lifespan, so you don’t want to over wash it. If you wear a wig cap underneath and remove your wig before going to bed, you can help reduce the number of times you need to shampoo and condition it. These bonnets will protect your wig and hair extensions while you sleep at night because it reduces the amount of friction your new hair will experience. Plus it extends the lifespan of your wigs, extensions, and toppers. Tip 2 Before you purchase your next wig please buy a styrofoam head or a canvas block head. You can find them both on Amazon but the styrofoam head can be found at your local beauty supply store for next to nothing. Now I normally start with a canvas block head that is smaller than my actual wig size. For example, I wear a small to medium wig cap so I would get a small canvas if you don’t want to overstretch your wig. Next I take my wig and pin it down to the canvas block head then I put one more pin in the back so it doesn’t fall off. Once I’ve done that the next thing I’m going to do is comb the wig out make sure there’s no tangles in it at all. Of course you want to get the right shampoo (sulfur-free) for the rest of the steps. After I’ve combed it out, take the wig and set it down into the sink. Just begin to wet it with water until it’s fully saturated. Once it’s fully saturated put it in your hand in and rub it around a little bit and then slowly add more shampoo to it. Remember to keep the shampoo and conditioner away from the lace because the lace has been hand knotted and if it gets wet then hair will start to shed more so be careful. Tip 3 Carefully rinse the shampoo and conditioner out of the hair, which is very easy to do because you have the wig sitting on the wig head. It’s been my personal experience over the years that this is actually the best way to shampoo and condition your wig. Instead of trying to hold the wig in your hand and doing all that other stuff this is it’s better with a block head. It’s stress-free and you allow the wig to keep its shape. Most well-made wigs have a shape that it fits around your head and if you mess around with that too much it will literally cause it to collapse and it will lose its shape. So when you’re not wearing your wig it’s always a good idea to put it on the styrofoam head or on a canvas block. Now the hair should feel really soft and I’m also suggest you remove your wig off the styrofoam head or canvas block head and lay it on top of a soft towel and gently roll it to remove the excess water.

Each hair fiber is made up of three layers. The innermost layer is called the medulla, and it is composed of loosely packed cells at the center of a single strand. The middle part of your hair fiber that surrounds the medulla is called the cortex, which comprises keratin proteins and structural lipids. The cortex makes up most of the hair strand mass and is surrounded by the cuticle layer, which protects the overall structure of each strand. The hair cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair shaft, it acts as a protective barrier for the hair strand and gives it a lot of shine. The cuticle is made up of layers that look like shingles. You can take one strand of your hair and slide your finger down your hair shaft. It will feel really smooth. To feel the cuticle, you will need to slide your fingers up your hair strands to feel the shingles that compose the cuticle. So why is the cuticle so important when dealing with hair extensions? If the hair strands are not going in the same direction, the hair will not be happy, and you will not be satisfied because it will tangle up all the time. When creating hair extensions, the hair needs to be going in the same direction. The Hair Extension Industry Truthfully, the hair extension industry is still largely unregulated and does not have a legitimate grading system. Since 2010, Hair extension manufacturers have struggled to set themselves apart from their competitors regarding how to grade and sell more of their hair extension products to consumers. So, these manufacturers came up with the so-called hair grading system that uses a combination of numbers ranging from 4 to 12 and the letters, usually “A” or “AA and “AAA.” All this is an attempt to prove that their hair is better quality than the other hair extension manufacturers. As a licensed hairstylist and certified hair replacement specialist, I have a unique perspective about hair extensions as I have personally worn and installed just about every type of hair extensions. The number one piece of advice I give people seeking to purchase new hair extensions or wigs is to take the hair extensions and run your fingers through it. If you feel any type of resistance then you may have a valid reason to be concerned. Next, gently take the hair bundle and slide it behind your neck. It should feel great, not itchy. Hair Extension Types Different degrees or types of hair are used when manufacturing hair extensions, wigs, hairpieces, and toppers. Lets go over some of the common types of hair you’ll find. 100% Virgin Hair (Raw) Raw virgin hair is sourced from donors who did not use chemicals on their hair. The hair is usually thick and in excellent condition; it is the most expensive hair you can buy and it has the highest quality. It is human hair with all the cuticles going in the same direction which hasn’t gone through any chemical or mechanical processing. Some manufacturers will steam treat the hair to create a different texture. If the hair is straight, it is still raw virgin hair. Remy or Remi HairThis hair is sourced from two or more donors.
