QUICK LOOK AT BOTH Frontals and closures have different advantages and setbacks, the choice you make between them depends on what you are trying to achieve with your wigs or hair extensions. In short, frontals and closures are what we call mini hairpieces, they are used to finish off your sew ins or added to top wigs for more volume. Naturally the goal is to give you a flawless but natural look, like the hair is growing out of your scalp. Let’s start with frontals. FRONTALS We at Ada Leroux Hair really love frontals, they are so versatile allowing for styling flexibility. Of the two mini hairpieces mentioned above, a frontal usually measures 13 inches in length from ear to ear and go 4 to 6 inches deep. This length is great because it allows for deeper partings and front updo’s. Secondly, they are a great solution for women and girls experiencing traction Alopecia or other medical hair loss issues because they also require less bundles. Frontals are made with a lightweight materials: the hair is hand tied knotted to the lace so that when its laid next to skin looks like hair growing out of scalp. Customization is often required and should be done by an experienced hair stylist. Due to delicate materials used a word of caution is needed, as great as frontals are we do not recommend them for daily everyday wear. Frontals give you so many options for styling. You can do a center part or deep-side part, but you can also pull your hair back into a half-ponytail or full ponytail. This is a great option for those who like to mix up their looks and change the way they part their hair. With this hairpiece, you’re not limited to the number of ways you can part or style your hair. Do keep in mind, because frontals are so versatile and include more material, they do tend to be pricier than closures. CLOSURES A closure is similar to a frontal, but it has more limitations when it comes to styling. Instead of having a strip of scalp-like material that runs from ear to ear, the closure typically comes in a horseshoe shape in the following sizes: 4×4, 5×5, 6×6, and even 7×7- inch. Closures are hand tied and knotted with human hair giving the illusion of hair growing from scalp. The closure can be placed on the middle, right or left side of the sew in or wig.  Unlike the frontal, which allows you to part your hair in an infinite number of ways, the closure only allows for a few different parting styles. If that is a big concern for you, then opt in to the largest sizes closures 5×5, 6×6, or 7×7-inch. Closures are an excellent choice for daily wear and tends to be a bit easier to manage. If you are thinking about trying bangs then closures are great way to test that look out.  Keep in mind it’s not really possible to create up-dos or half ponytails with closures, but they are great for every day styles that is why they cost a bit less than frontals. Quality and grade of hair also may factor into the cost. Extend the life of your wigs and hair extensions buy wearing our newest products, our satin bonnets are a great choice for maintaining hair quality. All the best, Ada Leroux Hair Hey do you wear our products? We would love to see your selfies!

How to successfully care for your system at home Keep your hair system looking great I remember the very first wig I bought, I was so excited. My wig was a long wavy black one, back then it was called a “french body wave”. I wore my first wig for about a week and I decided to wash it because I was in a hurry and needed it to look a certain way. So I took it off my head and just started wetting it. To my horror the wig became completely matted to the point I could not do anything to fix it. Needless to say I ended up having to buy another wig that same day. As I became a hairstylist and learned more about hair and extensions I realized that I was not properly educated in how to wash my wig or hair extensions. I did not realize that beauty shop “hair” is not really hair. Have you ever noticed when you buy hair that it seems to get matted or tangled after washing it just a couple of times? That’s because its literally disreguarded hair from the temples or hair collected from brushes and combs. Ugh anyways, the point I am trying to make is that I did not purchase good quality hair to begin with, nor did I know how to wash it correctly. So, I thought perhaps you may want to know how to successfully wash your wig at home. First let me start by saying if you search online you will see many different examples of how to wash a wig at home. Some suggestions are good and some are not. I am sharing my experiences of trial and error by washing my own wigs at home. You must decide which suggestions works best for you. Tip 1 Deciding how often you want to wash your wig is a personal choice. However, many women choose to wash their lace wigs and hair extensions every one to two weeks. In the Summer the hot weather can be a bit of a challenge, in such cases it’s a good idea to simply rinse hair with lukewarm water and apply conditioner sparingly to avoid buildup. If the hair begins to feel sticky or dry, it may be time to give it a good shampoo. The same goes for if the wig begins to lose its curl or volume. Remember, washing your wig will limit its lifespan, so you don’t want to over wash it. If you wear a wig cap underneath and remove your wig before going to bed, you can help reduce the number of times you need to shampoo and condition it. Ada Leroux Hair offers real satin bonnets in different colors. These bonnets will protect your wig and hair extensions while you sleep at night because it reduces the amount of friction your new hair will experience. Plus it extends the lifespan of your wigs, extensions, and toppers. Tip 2 Before you purchase your next wig please buy a styrofoam head or a canvas block head. You can find them both on Amazon but the styrofoam head can be found at your local beauty supply store for next to nothing. Now I normally start with a canvas block head that is smaller than my actual wig size. For example, I wear a small to medium wig cap so I would get a small canvas if you don’t want to overstretch your wig. Next I take my wig and pin it down to the canvas block head then I put one more pin in the back so it doesn’t fall off. Once I’ve done that the next thing I’m going to do is comb the wig out make sure there’s no tangles in it at all. Of course you want to get the right shampoo (sulfur-free) for the rest of the steps. After I’ve combed it out, take the wig and set it down into the sink. Just begin to wet it with water until it’s fully saturated. Once it’s fully saturated put it in your hand in and rub it around a little bit and then slowly add more shampoo to it. Remember to keep the shampoo and conditioner away from the lace because the lace has been hand knotted and if it gets wet then hair will start to shed more so be careful. Tip 3 Carefully rinse the shampoo and conditioner out of the hair, which is very easy to do because you have the wig sitting on the wig head. It’s been my personal experience over the years that this is actually the best way to shampoo and condition your wig. Instead of trying to hold the wig in your hand and doing all that other stuff this is it’s better with a block head. It’s stress-free and you allow the wig to keep its shape. Most well-made wigs have a shape that it fits around your head and if you mess around with that too much  it will literally cause it to collapse and it will lose its shape. So when you’re not wearing your wig it’s always a good idea to put it on the styrofoam head  or on a canvas block. Now the hair should feel really soft and I’m also suggest you remove your wig off the styrofoam head or canvas block head and lay it on top of a soft towel and gently roll it to remove the excess water.

WHAT IS A CRANIAL PROSTHESIS?

Lets start by sharing what it is and what it does A cranial hair prosthesis is a specially designed head covering that restores hair on the head and gives the wearer a natural-looking head of hair. The cranial prosthesis also aids in the regulation of body temperature and protects the scalp against outdoor elements. A cranial hair prosthesis is considered a necessary part of a person’s health recovery. Therefore Health insurance companies will cover 80 to 100 % of the cost if you get a written doctor’s prescription. I have great respect for women who choose to go bare-headed like Jada Pickett Smith, I have to agree she rocks that bare head nicely. However, other women are not as comfortable in rocking an uncovered head. Hair on your head is a not only an important part of your body, but it also represents a symbol of pride and joy for many women. Your mental health is essential to your overall well-being, not to mention your perceived attractiveness, sexual appeal, and feeling good about yourself. When battling any disease that causes hair loss, there is nothing wrong with wanting hair; after all, we can agree that it is a large part of a person’s identity. Replacing your lost hair is not vanity, it fills a need to feel normal and recognize the person in the mirror that is staring back at you.  A cranial hair prosthesis (or hair system) is a custom-made medical head covering specifically designed for patients who have lost their hair. These medical conditions include alopecia areata, alopeciatotalis, lupus, thyroid diseases, trichotillomania, and chemotherapy. The correct terminology, cranial hair prosthesis, is often a recommended phrase when applying for medical insurance to cover the cost.  Cranial prostheses also help to protect your skin and weakened immune systems from the sun; just like your natural hair protects the scalp, the cranial prosthesis regulates body temperature. A cranial hair prosthesis is different from a regular wig because it is made to fit a person’s head shape and often mimic’s their natural hair. The base is msde from a hypoallergenic fabric because people with chemotherapy are sensitive to any material, and their scalp is prone to allergies. The hair is usually hand-knotted onto the lace base of the cap to create an illusion of growing hair. Will my insurance cover the cost of my cranial prosthesis? Hair loss can be an unfortunate side effect of many chemotherapy treatments for cancer. Some people may embrace their newly bare head and leave it uncovered. Still, others are more comfortable wearing a cranial prosthesis. Even when hair loss is expected, it can still be shocking to see it fall out. Planning for hair loss may help ease this transition. There are many options for head covers, and all have advantages and disadvantages. A cranial hair prosthesis that looks like your natural hair is an excellent choice before starting treatment. On average, it can take up to 60 days to produce cranial prostheses. Wigs can be expensive, but medical insurance may cover the cost of a wig when hair loss is caused by chemotherapy. The approval process may not be a simple one, though. This article will explain how you can request coverage for a wig and your options if insurance doesn’t pay. Call Your Health Insurance Provider Many private health insurance policies will cover at least part or all of the cost of a cranial prosthesis. Before meeting with a certified hair replacement specialist, it’s essential to call the insurance company and ask about their requirements. The cost of the cranial prosthesis can vary tremendously, depending on the following factors: How the cranial prosthesis is made (with natural human hair or synthetic materials). The hairstyle and the quality of the wig. With the advances in synthetic hair, a cranial prosthesis may be covered entirely by your insurance company, but the cost of a real human hair cranial prosthesis may be more expensive and may come with a higher out-of-pocket cost. Again, it depends on your insurance company as they may cover 80% or up to 100% of the cost. Terminology is key A prescription from a dermatologist or oncologist is often needed for insurance coverage. Still, the terminology used in the order is essential. All health insurance companies require a prescription that uses one of the following terms and must include one of the following codes for insurance to pay for them.  Hair prosthesis Full or partial cranial prosthesis  Cranial prosthesis Cranial hair prosthesis Extra-cranial prosthesis Codes are A9282, D5924 “Cranial Prosthesis,” and S8095 “Cranial Prosthesis” Though this terminology may sound strange, it’s just the way that insurance companies prefer to label chemotherapy-required cranial prostheses. The diagnosis from your doctor must include a letter stating why you need a cranial prosthesis.  These reasons usually are: To be protected from elements, i.e., Sun, cold, rain, and wind. Maintain body temperature control. Physical discomfort from lack of hair covering and the mental toll of not having hair. The insurance company may also require that you purchase it first, send in the receipt, and then file a claim.  When you file the claim, you must know how to classify your new hair. Under no circumstances should you tell your insurance company it is a “wig.” The claim will be denied; it must be called a full or partial cranial prosthesis, cranial hair prosthesis, or “durable medical goods.” Keep copies of your paperwork. Make copies of all paperwork related to your cranial prostheses. Keeping a file with copies of all medical-related hair loss costs can save money. If the claim is delayed or missing, resubmitting it is easy. The following items can be essential to keep. The healthcare provider’s cranial prosthesis prescription. Sales receipt

If you have a human hair wig, you can wash it with regular shampoos and conditioner, and in general treat it like your natural hair. However, since the hair is no longer receiving nutrients from the scalp, it is essential to be extremely gentle, and avoid over-combing (avoid combing at all if it is wet). However, when your wig is dry, be sure to comb it gently on a regular basis to prevent matting, particularly at the back of the neck. Never use synthetic wig cleaner on a human hair wig!! Not many people sleep in their wigs, but if feel like you must then consider purchasing our wig bonnets here. Proper storage techniques are another wig care essential! There are a few different ways you can store your wigs. When storing your wigs for long periods of time, be sure to keep them away from direct sunlight, dust, and heat.
