WHAT IS HAIR LOSS SUFFERING IN SILENCE In today’s world it is socially acceptable for men to be bald. In fact, being bald is connected to positive attributes ranging from intelligence to virility. However, in most cultures; a full head of luscious hair still is the epitome of feminine beauty and even of female gender identity. When a woman loses her hair, she may feel like she is losing her identity. This can be a traumatic experience with devastating impact on a person’s self-confidence. On top of that, often there is little social and public support for hair loss. If you are not dealing with a life-threatening disease,  people’s complaints about losing their hair is often overlooked and downplayed. “There’s worse than that”, “You’ll live with it”, “Girl shave it off rock that bald head”, or “It’s no big deal”, these words can be demoralizing to women struggling with hair loss. It is no surprise that 47% of hair loss sufferers would spend their life savings to regain a full head of hair and 60% would rather have their hair than money or friends. Even more unfortunately, the medical community also treats the issue of women’s hair loss as if it was nonexistent. Since hair loss does not appear to be a life threatening event, most physicians pay little attention to women’s complaints about hair loss and essentially tell their patients the same hurtful words, “you’ll just have to live with it”. When I volunteered with the American Cancer Society, they only offered synthetic wigs to the patients. The general consensus was that the patients should be glad to have this free wig that is offered to them. Their hair will grow back eventually, right? In my time of volunteering I can truly say all these women wanted was a real natural looking wig. Causes of Hair Loss From crowning glory to terrifying nightmares, here are some reasons why a woman can lose her hair: Hereditary hair loss, which means it can be inherited from a parent. Hair cosmetics with harsh chemicals. Illnesses and medications, like Alopecia, cancer and chemotherapy. Self-infliction, hair pulling also known as trichoitmilla and (traction alopecia) where constant pressure is causing the hair to fall out (wearing certain hairstyles, such as tight braids or tight ponytails). Hormone-related disorders, such as Thyroid disease or high stress levels. Autoimmune diseases. During pregnancy and during menopause women can lose their hair. Poor nutrition and rapid weight loss can also contribute to hair loss. In addition, allergies are a risining cause for concern, they can also result in hair loss. Diagnosis of Hair Loss When these concerns persist, a woman who suffers from hair loss generally will consult a dermatologist for a proper treatment plan. In most cases some hair loss can be reversed if discovered in time. However, generally speaking, no doctor is needed to validate the first signs of hair loss, which often can push a woman into a state of high alert, if not panic. The signs are first experienced in the privacy of the bedroom or bathroom; she wakes up in the morning to find hair on the pillow. Then she notices excessive hair loss when washing and brushing her hair. Her once full ponytail suddenly looks thinner or her part is widening. Ways to combat Hair Loss First thing is to figure out what is causing your hair loss. Typically during high-stress periods of life, we’re suffering from a vitamin deficiency as well. Make sure that you take your needed vitamins, eat a well balanced diet, rest and remove yourself from any situation or people who bring negativity to your life, visit your doctor, and do your best to be as healthy as possible. During this period of hair loss, avoid heavy hair products as they can weigh your hair down, and cause it to be thinner. Be gentle when caring for your hair during this time to avoid losing more hair, and most importantly, be patient! We all suffer from stress, but as long as we take care of ourselves as we go through the motions, we can manage it and experience happy times. Ways To Increase Hair Growth Even if you’re going through a stressful time in life, there are ways to curb that and still promote hair growth in your life. Always remember that hair growth takes time, and the remaining patient during your journey is essential. With that being said, here are some ways to increase hair growth. Shampoo: Use a shampoo that has natural ingredients and is sulfate, alcohol and  paraben free. Take the time to read the labels. Conditioner: Every-time that you wash your hair use a conditioner. Conditioners assist in replacing lipids and proteins within your hair and prevent more damage from occurring. Don’t Over Shampoo: Don’t shampoo every time you shower. Washing your hair with shampoo too often can cause your scalp to lose its natural oils, and strip your hair of its moisture. More tips! Take Hair Vitamins: If you haven’t tried using hair supplements, you might want to try incorporating some into your diet. Eating healthy will increase the benefits of the supplements as well! Also, just to make sure you’re not interfering with any medications you may already be taking, make sure you check in with your doctor first. Trim: One of the primary methods of growing healthy hair is to trim it often. I remember being a child obsessed with how long my hair could grow

Remember, only you can control how long your hair will last. You work hard for your money, so if you just purchased new hair why not take care of it as if it was your own? There are some ways to prolong its lifespan. Keep it on a wig stand when you’re not wearing it. This can help maintain its structure and keep it from getting tangled. Sleep in a satin bonnet. Take a look at our selection of styles and colors here.   Avoid hot water, saltwater, and chlorine to prevent any damage to the strands, and be mindful of what tools you use to style your wig. Depending on the style and texture, you may not want to use heated styling tools, such as curling irons or straighteners. When in doubt, go easy on your wig. For example, if you purchased a body wave texture or kinky curly hair why in the world would you use heated tools? HOW TO SECURE YOUR WIG

Method 1: Wig Combs Almost all wigs usually come with hand sewn comb inside the wig caps if done properly they are placed in the following areas: the crown, back of the head and just above the ears. Just be aware that wig combs are only effective if you have some hair and you are not wearing a wig cap. Wig combs are easy to use and an inexpensive way of securing your wigs every day of the week. They come in different colors to match all your different wigs, as well as different sizes, to complement the different stylings of our wigs too. Once you’ve styled your wig, all your need to do is lift a handful of the top section of the wig and place the combs in to secure the wig around your scalp. It’s good to do a few trial runs of securing the wig with combs before wearing your wig out just so you feel comfortable and confident with where the combs are placed. Method 2: Wig Tape Before using any wig tape or adhesive it’s always a great idea to do a skin test on the inside of your elbow. Why? To make sure you’re not allergic to the ingredients in these products. If you notice any rashes, itching, or even swelling, discard that product before you put it on your head. If you’re a cancer patient please speak with your doctor before using any types of products on your skin. The wig tape is attached to the underside of your wig to secure a comfortable bond to your scalp. This type of bond may last from 7 to 10 days. It is a great place to start if you can not to secure your wig with your own hair. I strongly recommend you purchase the accompanying wig tape or glue solvent as it cuts down on the removal time of your wig. It’s a more scalp-friendly alternative to wig glue, as adhesives can irritate a sensitive scalp, especially for those recovering from cancer treatment. Wig tape is a great way to keep your wig in place whilst still allowing for natural movement and the low residue tape allows for an  easy clean-up. The tape is good for daily wear dependent on temperature, humidity and body oils of the wig-wearer. Method 3: Wig Caps For those asking how to secure a capless wig, a wig cap may be the perfect solution for you. There are many benefits to wearing a wig cap, most importantly it guarantees that your long or short natural hair will stay in place. What’s more, it prevents friction from breaking the natural hair by creating a safe and sanitized barrier between the wig and scalp, maintaining the cleanliness of your wig. Some of our customers love wig caps, and some don’t. It is a completely personal preference. Wig caps don’t just act a protective barrier between the scalp and your wig, they are also the perfect tool for helping keep your wig in place.  Method 4: Wig Grip The Wig Grip was designed to make wearing a wig during hair loss more secure, confident and comfortable. It adjusts to body movements, distributes the weight of a wig or hat evenly and keeps them from slipping. It is phenomenal for alleviating pressure and provides great wig security. If you want to remove your wig regularly throughout the day, it is easy to take on and off with the wig grip. If you wear wig tape all day you can sometimes get a tension headache, while that typically won’t happen with a wig grip. You might find that a wig grip band is a lightweight, durable, and very comfortable solution. Method 5: Wig Glue Like with wig tape, wig glue should only be used by people little or no hair. As with wig tape, wig glue is an extremely secure method of wig attachment, and you could potentially rip out hairs when you remove it. Remember to purchase wig tape or glue remover solvent to make the removal process easier. Wig glue is a adhesive that will dry clear, require at least two or three coats to create a strong bond, and won’t leave stains. Most glue is has a water base and is pliable (it will move with your skin rather than staying stiff in one area). This time we want to focus on hair care products made especially for all types of textures. At the beginning of the list, you’ll find some of our favorites from Black-owned businesses. Have a look and treat yourself. WIG CARE TIPS The way you take care of your wig is largely dependent on what it is made out of. If you have a human hair wig, you can wash it with regular shampoos and conditioner, and in general treat it like your natural hair. However, since the hair is no longer receiving nutrients from the scalp, it is essential to be extremely gentle, and avoid over-combing (avoid combing at all if it is wet). However, when your wig is dry, be sure to comb it gently on a regular basis to prevent matting, particularly at the back of the neck. Never use synthetic wig cleaner on a human hair wig!! Not many people sleep in their wigs, but if feel like you must then consider purchasing our wig bonnets here. Proper storage techniques are another wig care essential! There are a few different ways you can store your wigs. When storing your wigs for long periods of time, be sure to keep them away from direct sunlight, dust, and heat. For this reason, many people choose to store their wigs safely in a closet. This allows them to keep the wigs well out of harm’s way. If your wondering what type of wigs we have to offer take a look here.
